IAU U.S. Individual Membership: Application Information

Applications for U.S. individual membership in the International Astronomical Union (IAU) are accepted once every three years. The application period is now open, and applications will be accepted until December 15, 2023 (11:59 PM EST).

Application website: http://www.iau.org/submissions/membershipapplication/fpj7z1q8gwme/.

Minimum requirements to apply:

  • Three years past the completion of a PhD in astronomy or a related field
  • Currently working in the field of astronomy
  • Currently residing in and planning on continuing career within the United States (U.S. citizenship is not required)

Before initiating your application, please gather the following materials:

  • Your curriculum vitae.
  • A chronological list of colleges and universities attended.
  • A bibliography of your scientific papers or publications, including their titles and references.
  • A chronological list of your employment history, including position titles, dates of employment, and any fellowships, lectureships, or sabbaticals.
  • A list of membership in professional and honor societies.
  • A list of notable professional distinctions, such as prizes, awards, or special lectureships.
  • Contact information for two IAU members willing to verify that you meet the criteria for IAU membership.

Review Process: The U.S. National Committee for the IAU (USNC/IAU) will review and make recommendations on all U.S. applications in early January 2015. The USNC/IAU recommendations must then be reviewed and approved by the IAU General Assembly. This will happen during the General Assembly in Hawaii in August 2015.

Although applicants will be notified of their membership status AFTER the General Assembly, non-members may attend the IAU General Assembly, and are even strongly encouraged to do so. A box on the membership application requests an invitation to attend the General Assembly.
